Walter Sisulu University is a unitary, multi-campus, comprehensive university, with campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City and Queenstown and has recently approved its divisional management system and academic structure and architecture.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR (PEROMNES 6/5) & HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

(Five-year Contract)

The Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced employee to head the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences, participate in teaching and learning including postgraduate student supervision and conducting research within the department.

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Physics or related field (NQF Level 10).
  • An NRF rating will be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • 10 years teaching at a tertiary institution.
  • Evidence of relevant administrative experience.
  • Evidence of recent conference papers (must include both local and international conferences), peer-reviewed publications (a minimum of 10 published articles for Associate Professor and 15 published articles for Professor).
  • Evidence of postgraduate student supervision.
  • Evidence of ability to attract external research funds.

Key Performance Areas

  • Teaching Physics of Materials.
  • Overall Departmental Strategy development and execution.
  • Undertake research and supervise postgraduate research projects.
  • Development of research projects under niche areas in the department.
  • Mentor young academics and emerging researchers.
  • Initiate and oversee community engagement projects, partnerships and collaboration.
  • Curriculum/ programme development and quality assurance.
  • Resource management: people, budget, finance and assets.
  • Monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

Competencies:

  • Assessment and moderation of student learning.
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and development.
  • Proficiency in using the computer, Microsoft office and other relevant software packages.
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills, including a commitment to collegiality.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Capacity and willingness to assume leadership positions on projects outside the department.

PLEASE NOTE: Shortlisted candidates will be required to present a mini lecture in which they outline their 5-year Departmental plan with measurable outputs and milestones.

This is a five year fixed-term position and remuneration is in the form of an allowance on top of the remuneration the incumbent receives for his/her substantive position. Candidates will revert back to their substantive positions upon completion of their term.
