Milpark offers full-time, part-time and distance learning Higher Education (HE) and Further Education and Training (FET) qualifications, as well as career-focused short courses. The higher education qualifications offered start at NQF level 5, extend into levels 6 and 7, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at NQF level 9, and culminate in the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) at NQF level 10. The Position
This position of Head of Research will take overall responsibility for Milpark Business School’s research processes and the activities related to postgraduate student’s research projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting a culture of research scholarship by developing the research capacity and skills of the academic staff and students in line with the institution’s target research. The Head of Research will take responsibility for the coordination of the Doctoral Programme..

Management of Doctoral and MBA research processes

•End-to-end management of DBA and MBA research processes.
•Manage deliverables from internal and external members of staff fulfilling roles related to the research processes.
•Liaise with academic staff and students (telephonic, personal & electronic) in terms of the research processes:
oidentification of topics
ocoaching of students in terms of dissertation writing
oreceiving proposals
ooverseeing process of entering proposals into database
oassisting students in the conceptualisation of dissertation topics
•Set up and coordinate contracts with independent contractors (supervisors, co-supervisors, internal- & external markers).
•Assess proposals and providing feedback.
•Manage dissertation examination processes.
•Schedule supplementary training sessions for students where necessary.
•Regular review of research processes in consultation with the appropriate committees and relevant faculty.
•Regular progress reporting on numbers of proposals and dissertations submitted / general issues and dissertations finalised.

Recruitment and performance management
•Recruit supervisors per discipline area in collaboration with HODs and manage profiles.
•Manage supervisor allocations per methodology and discipline area.
•Manage student-supervisor relationship and student progress.
•Manage supervisors’ performance.
•Manage disciplinary issues for referral for possible disciplinary action.
•Undertake and organise training and development of academic staff through research-related workshops and/or the provision of appropriate resources and interventions.
•Conduct research and produce publications or other research outputs in line with business school objectives.
•Act as supervisor and/or examiner for student research in field of expertise.
•Mentor active researchers by providing support and supervision for approved projects including co-publication.
•Give input into the services delivered by the Learning Resources Centre.

Customer Service
•Improve and ensure student motivation.
•Assist with after-hour academic representation on campus when required.
•Be available to meet with students in terms of an agreed schedule after hours.
•Ensure research student profiles and progress are kept up to date with all contact information and/or academic info.
•Address student academic queries and disputes.
•Provide academic consulting services to students, faculty, and sales & marketing department.
•Participate in HEQC/DoE enquiries.
•Consult with marketing and administrative departments in connection with student evaluation and feedback.
•Maintain professional relationships with all Milpark management and staff.

Take accountability for own development

•Expand own expertise on continuous basis.
•Attend workshops, conferences, etc. to stay abreast of developments in field of expertise.
•Engage with the professional and academic communities.

•A relevant Doctoral Degree.


•An understanding of the challenges of higher education and an awareness of trends in the global business landscape.
•5 years teaching and research experience at tertiary level.
•Experience in guiding post-graduate research students.
•Demonstrable record of research achievement, including recent published scholarly work and a clear commitment to developing research expertise.
